The Waratah, Telopea speciosissima, is the floral emblem of New South Wales and one of the great showstoppers of the Australian bush. Its name Telopea comes from a Greek word meaning “seen from afar”, an apt description for those brilliant crimson flower heads rising above its deep green foliage. What looks like one spectacular bloom is actually a dense cluster of many individual flowers, surrounded by large crimson bracts.
Its bold structure has also made the Waratah a favourite subject in Australian art and design for generations. In Meryl’s hands, that strength is balanced by close attention to form and detail, giving the flower all the grandeur it deserves without losing the delicacy within it.
