The floral emblem of New South Wales, the Waratah has featured prominently in Australian art, architecture and design, particularly since Federation. Its spectacular spring flower heads are made up of hundreds of individual flowers, creating the dense, dramatic form that makes it so instantly recognisable.
The species was formally named by botanist James Edward Smith in 1793, with speciosissima derived from the Latin speciosus, meaning beautiful or handsome.
