The Sturt's Desert Rose is one of Australia's nine magnificent floral emblems. This floral emblem was named in honour of Captain Charles Sturt, who was the first to collect this species in the creek beds of the Barrier Rangers during 1844-45 exploration of central Australia. This plant belongs to the same genus as commercial cotton and is sometimes also known as Australian Cotton.
