The Cooktown Orchid is one of Australia's nine magnificent floral emblems. This species was first collected on a small island north east of Cape York and sent to London, where it was described and named in 1852 by John Lindley, a colleague of Sir Joseph Banks. In 1959 this orchid was proclaimed the floral emblem of Queensland.
